Google has announced that it is looking to spend about 1 billion dollars on a new satellite fleet in hopes to broaden internet access globally. Google and Facebook alike, have both vested interests in extending the internet to all corners of the world because it would then open up the market for their services. Among the various plans and ideas that the two companies have looked into investing in and implementing, Google is taking on a more lucrative and direct approach in purchasing a fleet of satellites.

Google’s driving force behind the proposed program of purchasing 1 billion dollars worth of satellites is in driving their business into parts of the world currently unable to access or use the internet. Facebook and Google alike both have vested interests in allowing some of the most underserved regions access to the internet. While some tend to rely on the openness or connectivity that comes with the introduction of the internet to new regions, one mustn’t forget the profit to be made in these previously untouched areas. That being said, it only adds credibility as the driving force as Google plans for what could be as much as a 3 billion dollar program should in the primary stages, it be successful.
World Wide Connectivity
World wide connectivity that is both revenue generating and investment friendly has been a challenge for both Google and Facebook. Both companies have been looking into more alternative venues in which to launch their platforms for success. Facebook had been looking at Titan Aerospace, a drone manufacturer of solar powered drones boasting a five years of nonstop, non-grounded flight plan. The company was then bought out and snatched up by Google in April of this year. Both companies have expressed massive amounts of interest in world wide connectivity and have been allocating massive amounts of funding and research into making this idea come to a reality. Google had originally invested into their first phase of Project Loon, whereby Google used high altitude balloons in order to deliver and bounce around broadband service for users to gain localized internet capability. Business analysts believe that the drones being produced by Titan Aerospace will eventually be the next phase of the project allowing for a longer duration of the signal at a much more cost effective price. Clearly the emergence of a new market is critical to the overall profits and constant stream of revenue for Google and Facebook alike. Those in charge of Project Loon at Google are very serious about the long term implications of acquiring new markets and users for their services. Since the company is looking to invest in a fleet of satellites that would be able to provide the internet to a much broader scope of users and would effectively be the most cost efficient and effective way to help connect the remaining untouched areas of the world.

Satellites offer the best option for broad scale coverage and are the most effective way of accessing the internet currently. That being said, the cost of producing a satellite as well as launching it are astronomical to say the least. This would be the understanding that has been recognized and had initially pushed for the more alternative primary sources of funding and application. Google has been quoted in stating, “Internet connectivity significantly improves people’s lives. yet two thirds of the world have no access at all.” Google is committed to improving the market for their product and is seeking to open up the world to the internet even at great financial costs to them. It is possible that Google will not be using each newly acquired piece of technology in stages of progression but rather will use all forms to complement each other in order to provide the best allowance for connectivity depending on the region and demands. The first generation of satellites that Google has been investing in weight roughly 1500 pounds each are being equipped with broadband connectivity capable equipment. Google hopes that the final phase of the satellites that will be launched should weigh less than 250 pounds and be much smaller.
This is not the first time a company has taken a crack at the possibility of introducing connectivity in other parts of the world, but if successful will become a benchmark for the industry. Google is on the forefront of the technological leaps in trying to connect the world to the internet and open up the world to more. While many disagree with the overall projected cost of the program, Google continues on pushing forward in a both an anxious and positive manner. As the company looks to invest in a new satellite fleet, the dreams of both Facebook and Google is seemingly coming into reality.
